Institute of Design and Innovation

The campus is located in a rural environment on the outer edge of Shenzhen, extending along the mountain of Phoenix Mountain. The building merges with the surrounding landscape, while preserving the readability of its horizontal structure, it ensures that no overly prominent architectural elements will interfere with the terrain of the 'plateau'. The design draws inspiration from the Chinese character '一', and creates a large-scale landmark building with obvious linear characteristics in the site, aiming to highlight the momentum of the 'landscape line'. The whole building is separated from the ground like a bridge, and forms a main façade with a length of more than 700 meters. The main body of the building is suspended above the ground, giving visual transparency to the pedestrian level, and its height of convergence also ensures the vision of the broad landscape. On the ground full of natural interest, the design plan constructs a safe shelter, which contains a series of public spaces and gardens, and is dotted with a 'dome' for accommodating a variety of academic functions. The functional organization of the campus is simple and intuitive, mainly centering on the two elements of 'super ground' and 'super roof'. The 'super roof' and the 'super ground' are connected to each other through the traffic core area of the campus. This 'core area' provides services for all teaching spaces in the two floors of the main building, including classrooms, teaching laboratories, and research laboratories. There is a panoramic corridor above the roof: a huge balcony 50 meters above the ground, which can bring the view of the city into your eyes. The path leading to the roof level constructs a garden that belongs to everyone, and creates spaces with specific functions and atmospheres in different locations of the building, such as gardens, terraces, squares, and sports areas.
